New Fortnite: Battle Royale Update Available Now; Patch Notes Detail What's Different
Following a brief maintenance period, Epic Games has released the revolutionary 2.2.0 update for Fortnite on PC, PS4, and Xbox One. As detailed previously, it deals primarily with Battle Royale, adding a newly updated version on the map, pre-game voice chat, and much more.
Updates towards the map include the most significant component on the patch. New areas are already added, primarily on the western half in the map, that had been somewhat sparsely populated prior to this Fortnite Weapons. This includes a different city section and underground mines. Existing areas also get a makeover, with Epic providing more differentiation involving the various biomes. As lead systems designer Eric Williamson said recently, "The swamp feels swampier, the forest feel more mountain-y. Really, various areas on the map feel more unique."
Epic also has rolled out a different level-streaming system. Although it doesn't directly impact gameplay, Epic says it "enabl[es] a richer map and improved performance." Load times on consoles are actually "greatly reduc[ed]" high should be less hitching generally speaking. A variety of Fortnite Items visual improvements are also implemented, with new water and grass/foliage effects now constantly in place.
Other additional features include the addition of voice chat inside the pre-game lobby, an update on the killfeed to exhibit the distance on sniper rifle kills, plus a revamped version from the Scoped AR's sight. Another key change, removing friendly fire, was implemented recently, though it may only be considered a temporary measure as Epic evaluates what impact it offers on the experience.
The full patch notes are available on Epic's website. Fortnite: Battle Royale is really a free download, while access towards the Save the World mode remains in paid early access.
