Activision/Vivendi leave ESA, skip E3
Yesterday, selected members with the gaming press were sent an invite to register for this current year's E3 Media & Business Summit. The invitation offered a nontransferable registration towards the 2008 event, that may return the Los Angeles Convention Center from July 15 to 17. It didn't take very long for targeted traffic to notice that though Nintendo, Sony, and Microsoft were all listed as participating companies, several high-profile publishers didn't appear within the list. Vivendi, Warner Bros, Bethesda, and several other people are all currently missing through the Entertainment Software Association's E3 Web site, along with international superpublisher Activision.
GameSpot has since reached seem to several Warmane Gold prominent publishers that attended recently's show but were omitted on the ESA's recent list, and will confirm that Warner Bros., Bethesda, id Software, Majesco, and D3Publisher still decide to attend case.
However, at the least one publisher will not take attendance with the ESA's annual event, which underwent significant downsizing not too long ago. Activision has confirmed for GameSpot that not merely will it 't be attending this season's E3 Media & Business Summit in LA, but also it has pulled out in the industry trade body entirely. "After careful consideration, Activision has didn't renew its ESA membership for business reasons and definately will not be playing any official E3 activities," an Activision representative told GameSpot in the statement. "We appreciate the work how the ESA has been doing over the years to advertise the interactive entertainment industry with state and federal governments and desire the ESA best of luck together with the show." The publisher wouldn't clarify for GameSpot whether it will be holding an event inside LA area through the E3 timeframe.
Activision's pullout on the ESA points too impending merger partner Vivendi Games follows suit. A statement through the ESA addressing Activision's move confirms that Vivendi has chosen to not renew its membership with all the lobbying and representative body.
"While the Entertainment Software Association continues to be preeminent voice for U.S. computer and game publishers, we are able to confirm that Activision and Vivendi Games opted to discontinue their membership," said Rich Taylor, senior v . p . of communications and research, in a very statement. "The ESA remains focused on advancing our industry's objectives, for instance protecting intellectual property, preserving First Amendment rights, and fostering an advantageous environment for that entire industry. Our high amount of service and value to members and also the larger industry remains unchanged."
Vivendi has not yet responded to GameSpot's ask for comment as to if it or its subsidiaries, including Blizzard Entertainment and Sierra Entertainment, is going to be attending in 2010's show. However, Activision CEO Bobby Kotick has recently declared he expects the near-$19 billion merger to conclude from the end of June, weeks prior to the annual industry event.
